Reflecting on the Marshmallow Challenge

It was fantastic to see the team work that went on in all the groups yesterday!  Have you checked out the photos yet?

I need some bloggers to add captions to the photos - see me if you're keen.  :-)

REFLECTING ON OUR LEARNING

  • Think about what you accomplished yesterday.
  • Discuss what the challenges were.
  • What worked well, what didn't work so well?
  • What would you change if you could do the challenge again today?
  • Is it easier working in the groups I chose or having the freedom to choose your own groups?  Why?
Post your comments / thoughts and let the discussion begin!  (Keep in mind Reader Courtesy too).

  1. my team and I did a Tepe tower,
We would have got the biggest tower if we had been able to let it go without it falling over.
I didn't find it hard to work with my team because we didn't want to argue with each other.
I liked both ways to work with others I get to make more friends when I'm with other people but when I'm with my friends we all have the same idea in our heads...
I would change our design as the Tepe and where we were positioned...

    1. Tepees do make it easier don't they. Your team had some great skills and I was really impressed with the level of communication. These are great skills to have when you need to work with others - also great life skills for later on too.

  2. The marshmallow challenge was a really interesting and heart stopping event. We really found it hard to work it with other people. But we learnt to work as a team and sharing ideas

    1. What were some of the things that made it difficult to work with other people - try to be specific because this can help you learn to work with others by identifying strengths and weaknesses.

  3. The marsh mallow Challenge was a pain because the spaghetti kepts on snaping into little peices and not enough string and the tape were not sticky.

    1. What Habits of Mind do you think you might need to work on so that you can accomplish the task?

  4. What I have accomplished yesterday: I have completed to make a marshmallow tower with some spaghetti noodles, tape and some strings.

What the challenge was: The challenge from this challenge was that we were working with some people that I haven't worked before. Also co-operating with them.

What worked well and What went wrong: Something that worked well in the challenge was, that we made a plan really quickly. The thing that went wrong in our group was that we wasted a lot of our equipment and we broke some of our spaghetti.

What we would change: I would change the plan because our plan was ruined by breaking some of our spaghetti.

Would it be different if we worked with someone we knew better: Yes because we would have had a very different plan and a different way to build it.

    1. You've identified the strengths and weaknesses very clearly Timothy. Why would it have been different with people you know - how would it have made the plan different? Try to be specific - it helps you work through your thinking - helps you be metacognitive.

How could you take what you know now about working with different people and learn from it for next time?

    2. Yep, they used the desk!!! Fantastic 'Thinking Flexibly' but not strictly sticking to the rules! :-)

Is it always a good thing to think the same way? What learning can happen when our ideas are challenged by someone who doesn't think the same way??? ;-)

It might be interesting to try this again with a longer time limit and teams made up of people we're used to working with - could be a very interesting outcome!

  6. It was challenging putting everything together especially making it tall? And working with other people because it was hard to argue.

    1. Is arguing always a bad thing? We do a lot of learning through our debates and discussions in class...

(Just challenging your thinking here Deighkotah!) :-)

    1. I noticed that you were becoming so much more confident in sharing your ideas Chyna as the challenge went on. Is working with different groups one way we could continue to help you develop your confidence. You had fantastic ideas to share and they were respected by the group. Awesome team work from what I could see. :-)

    1. Isn't it a great way to find out about how others learn and then learn from them and challenge our thinking! We need to continue to do more of this during the year. The more we share our ideas with others, the more interesting ideas we can create ourselves.

  10. What made it fun Keanu? Try to be more specific in your comments because this will help you to understand how you work as a learner and how you learn best. :-)
I was really impressed with your group and the level of communication. Could be a good group to work with again in the future.
